SPEAKER 1: Hi Jake! How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun? SPEAKER 2: Yeah, it was great! I went to see a film on Saturday with my girlfriend. It was an action movie called "Midnight Chase." SPEAKER 1: Oh, nice! Was it good? SPEAKER 2: It was really good. The story was amazing and the music was incredible. I loved the soundtrack. Did you see it? SPEAKER 1: No, I didn't. I stayed home and listened to music instead. I discovered a new band – they're from Brazil. Their songs are so catchy! SPEAKER 2: That sounds cool. What kind of music do they play? SPEAKER 1: They play pop and electronic music. I listened to their album three times already! I think they're better than most modern bands. SPEAKER 2: Haha, you're a big fan then! Do they have any concerts coming up? SPEAKER 1: I'm not sure. I just found them last week. Maybe I'll check online later. SPEAKER 2: You should! By the way, after the film, we went to a live music event downtown. A local DJ played great songs. We danced for two hours! SPEAKER 1: That sounds fun! I wish I went with you. Did you go back home late? SPEAKER 2: We left at around midnight, so yes, it was quite late. But it was worth it!

📖 Reading

Last Saturday, Maria and her brother Tom went to a new music festival in their city. The festival started at two o'clock in the afternoon, and it finished late at night. Maria wanted to see a pop singer, but Tom only liked rock music. So, they decided to watch different shows and meet later at the food trucks. While Maria was listening to the pop singer, she saw a famous actor from her favourite movie! She was so surprised that she dropped her phone. Luckily, a kind woman picked it up and gave it back to her. Maria didn't ask for a photo because she felt too shy. Meanwhile, Tom watched a rock band that played for almost two hours. He said the guitarist was amazing and the drummer was the best he ever saw. After the show, Tom bought a T-shirt with the band's name on it. At nine o'clock, Maria and Tom finally met at the food trucks. They talked about their afternoon and ate burgers together. Tom said, "I think live music is better than watching movies at home." Maria didn't agree. She loves movie nights more because she can relax on the sofa with snacks. In the end, they both agreed that the festival was a great day out, and they already planned to come back next year.

🗣️ Speaking — discussion

Context

  • People all around the world enjoy watching movies for different reasons—some love action and adventure, others prefer romantic stories or comedies.
  • The music in a movie is often just as important as the actors and story; a great soundtrack can stay with us long after we leave the cinema.
  • Different genres like horror, drama, fantasy, and documentaries appeal to different audiences.
  • Many people today watch films on streaming platforms like Netflix, while others still enjoy going to movie theaters.

Themes

  • Personal Connection to Film — How movies and their music touch our emotions and stay in our memory. A good film can make us laugh, cry, or think about our own lives.
  • The Role of Soundtrack — Music in films shapes our feelings and experience. A memorable melody or song can be just as famous as the movie itself.
  • Cinema vs. Streaming Culture — How technology has changed the way we watch movies—from big cinema screens to watching on our phones or laptops at home.

  2. Why do you think people watch movies together with friends or family?

  2. Do you prefer watching films at a cinema or at home? What are the advantages of each?
  3. Can a movie be good even if the story is not very interesting, if the music is excellent?

Cultural & Social Topics

  1. What are some famous films or soundtracks from your country?
  2. Do you think movies and music help people from different cultures understand each other better?

🎭 Classroom activity

Film Memory Game: In pairs, students take turns describing a movie they watched using simple past tense (e.g., 'I watched a superhero film last week. The hero fought a villain. The music was amazing!'). Their partner guesses the film or describes their own experience. This recycles the simple past while practicing speaking about personal film experiences.
